The Musical Universe of Thomas Mann: Doktor Faustus
Miguel Ituarte, piano and José María Pou, narration
Works by L. van Beethoven, F. Liszt and A. Schönberg. Dramatised readings of Thomas Mann's Doktor Faustus
The pianist Miguel Ituarte sets the novel Doctor Faustus, narrated by José María Pou, to music. The discovery of music by Adrian Leverkühn is identified with Bach's work; his view on absolute music with Beethoven's Sonata Op. 111; the meeting with the devil is reflected on Liszt's Faustus Waltz, while the creation of the twelve-tone system is paralleled with Schönberg, and the recreation of hell in Liszt's Aprés une lecture de Dante.
