Instrumental Rarities: Ondes Martenot and Glass Harmonica
Thomas Bloch, ondes Martenot and glass harmonica. Pauline Haas, harp
The subtlety of the glass harmonica and the ondes Martenot share the limelight with that of the harp in this concert. The first of these “instrumental rarities” was invented by Benjamin Franklin in 1761 and was associated with madness. The latter was invented by the multifaceted Maurice Martenot after World War I, a period in which there was much experimentation with sound.
