In 1846, Frédéric Chopin was going through a difficult moment in his life, following his break up with George Sand. It was at this time that he composed his Polonaise-Fantaisie, a piece combining the triple rhythm characteristic of the polonaise with the harmonic freedom and rhapsodic nature of the fantasia.
