The autobiographical fiction of Valle-Inclán: the Sonatas

Darío Villanueva

Assigned to the first stage of Valle-Inclán’s Modernism, the Sonatas, autobiographical fiction characterised by their intention as divertissement and dose of cynicism and imposture, they serve to contrast with the expressionist period of the creator of the grotesque tails. Darío Villanueva, who identifies Valle-Inclán as the most outstanding Spanish representative of European expressionism, contrasts the two periods: in comparison to the sentimentality, lyricism and individuality present in the Sonatas, the grotesque, the representation of history and the de-individualization of the characters prevail during the expressionist period.
