Italica: A Historiographical View

José María Luzón

Jose María Luzón discusses the archaeological history of the Roman city of Italica, also known as “Seville the old”, located in modern-day Santiponce (Seville). The journey begins with descriptions and drawings dating back to the sixteenth century and the earliest excavations from the eighteenth century, and progresses to the disputes arising from the discoveries that took place during the nineteenth century, and to the twentieth century, when this archaeological site was declared a National Monument and research into its urban layout was fostered.
