Directed by Robert Wiene, who also directed The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari, the film forms part of the final stage of the German Expressionist movement, which tended towards more naturalistic forms. According to Carlos F. Heredero, the plot, taken from science fiction, was used to present the metaphor of the so-called “schizophrenia characteristic of the German soul”, which tells the story of the anxiety of the film’s main character, a pianist who has been transplanted with the hands of a criminal, in the face of the “inner enemy” that threatens to possess him.
