Dressing in modernity, dressing in deco
Estrella de Diego
Since 1912, when many considered it “consumer Cubism”, art déco has turned out to be a synthesis of styles, in many cases aesthetically distant, inspired by the exotic, the Ballets Russes, jazz and avant-grade movements. Basing her discussion on figures like Alexander Rodchenko, Sonia Delaunay, Nancy Cunard and Tamara de Lempicka, and paying special attention to fashion and its relationship to “New women”, Estrella de Diego considers art déco to form part of the modern tension between constructivism and consumerism.
