Presentation of Underworld (1927)
One of the first gangster movies ever, Underworld is a melodrama set in the slums of the city of Chicago. Santos Zunzunegui emphasizes the directing style of Josef von Sternberg, in which the visual use of lighting, the angle of the camera and Baroque style of the sets predominate. The characterisation of Evelyn Brent in the leading role was a precursor to the character Marlene Dietrich would perform during the 1930s with the film’s director.
