Luis Angel de Benito presents the concert "Brazil: choros and other songs"
Darius Milhaud’s Le bœuf sur le toit (The Ox on the Roof) synthesizes the music of Brazil perhaps better than any other work. As Luis Ángel de Benito shows in his presentation, the French composer used as many as 28 melodies by Marcelo Tupynambá, Ernesto Nazareth and Chiquinha Gonzaga in his creation. Plagiarism? Cryptomnesia? Or perhaps a great capacity for assimilating and reinterpreting pre-existing music and converting it into something new without losing its essence?
