For some a liberal and for others a conservative, Professor Eduardo Nolla examines the figure of the French politician and jurist Alexis de Tocqueville and his trips to the United States to study different democratic systems. In Democracy in America, Tocqueville diagnosed what he called “bad democracy”: the tyranny of the majority government, in which the freedom of individual citizens to participate in politics is restricted.
