Mario Vargas Llosa: “Onetti symbolises the raison d’être of fiction better than any other writer”

Mario Vargas Llosa in conversation with Juan Cruz

Mario Vargas Llosa points to Juan Carlos Onetti as “one of the first Spanish-language writers to introduce modernity to fiction”. Vargas Llosa considers Onetti a “pioneer” whose teachers included Faulkner and who applied unusual treatments to Latin-American literature such as the modern narrative technique or the use of existential subject matter. Onetti’s fictitious reality, capable of narrating evil like no other, is examined in the novel La vida breve and the story “El infierno tan temido”.
