Manuel García: "Yo que soy contrabandista", from El poeta calculista. Franz Liszt: Rondeau fantastique sur un thème espagnol ("El contrabandista") S 252

The song “Yo que soy contrabandista”, which comes from Manuel García’s tonadilla El poeta calculista, enjoyed wide popularity throughout the nineteenth century and became one of the stereotypes of Spanish music in Europe during the Romantic period. Liszt used its melody in his Rondeau fantastique S 252, an early work of dazzling virtuosity that the pianist dedicated to George Sand, who wrote her story Le contrabandier after hearing it.
