Parody operas: La Golfemia and La Fosca, by Luis Arnedo

La golfemia and La fosca, by Luis Arnedo

La golfemia, an ingenious parody of La bohème premiered in 1900, transferred the plot from Romantic Paris to castizo Madrid, from the Latin Quarter to the Verbena de San Antonio and from the Café Momus to the Cafetín Non Plus. For its part, La fosca, premiered four years later, is a parody of Tosca in which (as occurs in the original work) no one is spared. Both are good examples of parody-zarzuela, a genre that was very successful at the dawn of the twentieth century thanks to composers like Luis Arnedo.
