How is polyphony painted? Klee and Bach

Ana María Valderrama, violin and Luis del Valle, piano. Presenter: Fernando Palacios

Paul Klee’s painting Fugue in Red can be interpreted as the pictorial form of a Bach fugue, a composer the painter loved and performed. This video explains this parallel, demonstrating how a musical theme and a geometrical shape are, in fact, similar objects. Musical movement is expressed in painting using the gradation of colour and the gradual transformation of the notes. In this way, Klee gives his painting a polyphonic nature, in which some elements seem to pursue others.
