What remains is founded by the poets: Friedrich Hölderlin
Helena Cortés Gabaudan
“Hölderlin can be summed up in one concept, that of poetry,” declares the German scholar Helena Cortés Gabaudan. A German poet and philosopher of the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centurias, his lifetime of work combined the ideals of the Enlightenment and Romantic eras and, together with the philosophers Hegel and Schelling, he demanded a “new mythology” to educate society in democracy and beauty. To do this, he used the motives of nature, love and Pericles’s Greece and aspired towards a united Germany, according to the French revolutionary model. Only at the end of his life did he have doubts about the messianic nature of his poetry.
