Joan Manén's Caprice Català

Francisco Fullana, violin and José Menor, piano

Caprice Català nº 3 Op. A-33 by Joan Manén

Joan Manén was one of the most outstanding violinists of the early-twentieth century. A child prodigy (at age 15 he performed at Carnegie Hall in New York), he performed throughout Europe alongside figures of the likes of Richard Strauss, Enrique Granados and Pablo Sarasate. He began composing at the instances of his father, who didn’t want him to take composition classes so that he would only be guided by his instinct. The Caprice català nº 3, published in 1899, is based on the popular song La pastoreta and reflects the influence of the French music of his time.
