Francisco J. Laporta (Madrid, 1945) is Emeritus Professor of Philosophy of Law at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. A Doctor of Law, he was Director of the Philosophy of Law Department of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (1973-1977) and Vice Chancellor of the same institution (1982-1983). He was responsible for the edition of the Antología Pedagógica de Francisco Giner de los Ríos (1977). His publications include Adolfo Posada: Política y Sociología en la crisis del liberalismo español (1974), Entre el Derecho y la Moral (1993), Los derechos históricos en la Constitución (2006, with Alejandro Saiz Arnaiz), El imperio de la Ley (2007) and Bases teóricas de la interpretación jurídica (2010, with Aulis Aarnio and Manuel Atienza).

He has been Director of the Instituto de Derechos Humanos de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid (1985-1986), Director of the Centro de Estudios Constitucionales (1987-1993) and State Councillor (1987-1993). He was a member of the Grupo Internacional de Investigación en Derecho Comparado (International Research Group on Comparative Law), the Tampere Club and the IVR Executive Committee (International Association for the Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy), and a patron of the Fundación Francisco Giner de los Ríos, Institución Libre de Enseñanza.

He has been awarded the Order of the Cross of St. Raymond of Peñafort. He received the Premio Nacional de Investigación Pascual Madoz in 2008.
