A graduate in Chemical Sciences from the Universidad de Barcelona and Doctor of Science from the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, Ricardo Amils (Barcelona, 1947) is Professor of Microbiology at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, where he was Dean of the Faculty of Sciences. He is a member of the Centro de Biología Molecular Severo Ochoa (UAM-CSIC), where he was Director of the Department of Virology and Microbiology (2014-2017), and a founding member of the Centro de Astrobiología (CSIC-INTA), a centre linked to the NASA Astrobiology Institute (NAI), where he was Director of the Department of Astrobiology (2005-2009), Director of the Department of Planetology and Habitability (2009-2012) and is presently responsible for the extremophile study group.

He researches the ecology of acidic environments, and aspects of biomining, bioremediation and astrobiology. His most recent interests are linked to the exploration of Mars using terrestrial equivalents, like Río Tinto (Huelva). He is the author of the book Río Tinto... Viaje a Marte (2010) and edited the volumes Biotecnología y medioambiente (2005) and Life in Extreme Environments (2007), among others.

Desde 2001 trabaja en RNE, donde ha desempeñado diferentes funciones en las áreas de economía e información nacional. Dirigió el informativo nocturno 24 horas y ha desempeñado el cargo de corresponsal parlamentario de los servicios informativos de RNE. Ha sido editor adjunto del Telediario primera edición de TVE y en la actualidad dirige el informativo matinal Las mañanas de RNE.
