Franz Kafka was born in Prague in 1883, the city which at that time was the capital of the Kingdom of Bohemia belonging to the double Austro-Hungarian crown, and died at the age of forty. He was born within a family of merchants who belonged to a minority of German heritage and to the Jewish minority inhabiting the city of Prague. In order to approach the work of this author, it is necessary to think about the following aspects of his life and time: 1) Kafka's Habsburg training (academic, political and vital). The reality of a declining empire. The importance of the 1914 war; 2) The Jewish condition of the author. The generational and personal dimension of this belonging. 3) The philosophical context of the first decades of the 20th century. The problem of nihilism in its relationship with literary creativity. 4) The artistic context. The push of the city of Prague. Czech cubism. 5) The life and literary vocation of Franz Kafka. His bachelorhood; and 6) A few presentation lines of a very compact work.
