It was neither born in Havana nor originated in Cuba. Rather, the habanera is a song that went back and forth between Spain and the colonies. It emerged as a European dance performed with sensual movements, arrived in Cuba with the colonists and later returned to the continent with its mellow tone and swaying metric. It then took root in the imagination of our composers, in particular French and Spanish composers, as an evocation of an exotic vision of the “other”, a music that combined races and spoke of impossible love.
