The East and Western Music

Wednesday Series:

Introduction

By definition, the idea of the “other” implies that which one is not, and leads to a questioning of one’s own identity. Historically, the relationship between East and West has been somewhat conflictive: Eastern cultures simultaneously exerted fascination and rejection over the West while, reciprocally, the East saw Western culture as something barbaric and brilliant at the same time. These connections have also had their importance in the area of music. This series reviews the mutual influences and imagined recreation between these two musical cultures, from Baroque to contemporary music.
