Introduction

As the nineteenth century progressed, the quartet spread to conquer new territories in the heat of musical nationalisms. Popular languages were incorporated into its writing and, in the transition to the twentieth century, it served as a privileged vehicle for the exploration of the historical avant-garde in search of new timbres.
