From the Renaixença to Noucentisme

The recognition of a linguistic and cultural identity lies at the heart of these two influential Catalan nationalist movements. The Renaixença, which originated in literature, sought to revitalise the Catalan language and was extended to other arts during the second half of the nineteenth century. During the first third of the twentieth century, this aesthetic trend would lead to Noucentisme, a term coined by Eugenio d’Ors to refer to an avant-garde that promoted a “pure”, orderly and elitist form of art, while advocating the classical Mediterranean tradition. Numerous compositions were inspired by these ideals, some of which can be heard in this series of three concerts.
