Like all the Latin-American composers of the twentieth century, Alberto Ginastera (1916-1983) had to face the complicated dilemma of how to maintain his Argentine identity in the face of the predominant European aesthetic. This difficult relation underlies the periodization that the composer himself carried out of his output and which shapes this series: objective nationalism (1934-47) inspired by the Argentine landscape and folklore, subjective nationalism (1948-57) with folkloric elements sublimated by a polytonal language, and neo-expressionism (1958-83), experimenting with avant-garde movements (from dodecaphonism and serialism to magic surrealism and primitivism).
