The emergence of ceramics is closely associated with the evolution of human kind. It was created as a testimony to its establishment in towns and as a reflection of its creativity, responding to needs of both a fuctional and symbolic nature. To a large extent, the way in which it was made, used and decorated transmit the history and culture of numerous peoples and is testimony to the originality of the civilisations that conceived it.

This series of lectures offers an introduction to ancient ceramics from regions key to its development: Crete and Mycenae, Greek, Chinese and Pre-Colombian cultures.
