Duke Ellington

Jazz returns to the Foundation this autumn, as it does every autumn. This time it focuses on the multi-faceted figure of Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington (1899-1974), one of the most important musicians and composers in music history for his rare inventiveness in the treatment of the orchestra. The sophistication of his huge number of compositions (many of which have become standards), ability as a jazz pianist and, above all, his contribution to the consolidation of the big band as a musical format made him an indispensable reference for future generations. This series of concerts pays tribute to Ellington in his dual facets as a performer and composer.
