Over the last century, the Halffters (the brothers Ernesto and Rodolfo, and their nephew Cristóbal) have been one of the most prominent families of Spanish composers. 2020 marks Cristóbal’s 90th birthday, the 120th anniversary of the birth of Rodolfo and the 115th of Ernesto. The Fundación Juan March has dedicated this series to them, bringing together their most significant works in three chamber formats: song, solo piano and the string quartet. Rodolfo’s song cycle Marinero en tierra Op. 27 (commenced in 1925) and Ernesto’s Sonata para piano (commenced in 1926) mark the beginning of a centenary journey including the world premiere of Cristóbal’s Cuarteto no. 11, completed in 2019 and composed expressly for this commemoration.
