Five Centuries of British Music

This series took place onFrom to

Throughout history, the island status of the British Isles has been conducive to creating certain peculiarities in the arts, in some instances vastly different to the trends prevailing on the continent. In the field of music, some of these differentiating features can be seen in renaissance polyphony with its liturgical specificities, songs with lute accompaniment, the predominance of Italian composers during the eighteenth century and an alternative to the continental European avant-garde at the beginning of the twentieth century. These four ideas form the basis for the programs presented in this series, taking us on a fleeting journey through British music over the last five centuries.
