Ortega y Gasset said quoting Goethe that "the man is differentiated from the animal in that it is not only a descendant, but is always a heir". Only man, never the animal, has past. But this past only lives within him in regards to the future. This series of conferences will examine the four main sources of the European conscience: Greek culture, Roman law, Christianity and Enlightenment, which have shaped part of the continent's history and are still valid, transformed and combined among them, in the man of today.
