Fairies: Marvellous Women

2/9/2016

Professor of Romance Philology, Victoria Cirlot, explores the origins of the magic dimension of the figure of the fay-lover, a Medieval motive from the novels of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries and in which the sublime image of female goodness and evilness coexist. The two basic and opposing types –the fay Morgan and the fay Melusine– correspond to underworld and earthly love respectively, and have survived in artistic creation as a mysterious symbol of women, of special interest to the Symbolists and the Surrealist movement.
