In Naples, during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries opera became a well-oiled industry that revolved around song. In this context, singers were not mere performers, but comprehensive musicians capable of creatively interacting with the composer. Durante’s Duetti are well-rounded examples of the Neapolitan formative ideal, in which educational function does not contradict aesthetic quality.
