The Eiffel Tower

4/28/2016

This iron monument of infinite metaphors was conceived by the businessman Gustave Eiffel for the 1889 Universal Exposition in Paris. The uniqueness of the Eiffel Tower lies in that, with the exception of the peak, it has no specific function. Controversial from its inauguration, this feat of civil engineering that revolutionised modern architecture–together with the demolished Galerie des machines–wound up becoming the symbol of Paris. In this lecture, the engineer and university professor Miguel Aguiló examines the Eiffel Tower from a historical, technical and aesthetic perspective.
