The Book of Job

10/6/2016

Gregorio del Olmo, Emeritus Professor of Hebrew Language and Literature at the Universitat de Barcelona, analyses the Book of Job from an inter-textual perspective, with references to the origins of the Mesopotamian cultures and paying special attention to the theme of pain and the opposition between good and evil in early Judaism. Based on the analysis of different parts of the biblical text, he demonstrates the evolution of Jewish religious discourse, coupled with the development of the story of the undeserved suffering of the righteous. To conclude, he presents three contemporary works that develop Job’s account in literary terms.
