Heracleopolis Magna (Egypt). The excavations of the Spanish archaeological mission

11/3/2016

The archaeologist Carmen Pérez Die, director of the Spanish archaeological mission in Heracleopolis Magna for over thirty years, analyses this Ancient Egyptian site. Pérez Die discusses issues referring to the location, origin and development of the urban area, as well as the discoveries made during the mission, including the necropolis and artistic, archaeological, architectural, sculptural and pictorial examples pertaining mainly to the First and Third Intermediate Periods. The work methodology of her fieldwork is also explained in the lecture, which concludes with a description of the final phases of excavation and reconstruction of the temple that lends its name to the city, Heryshaf (or Hershef) –associated with the Greek hero Heracles–.
