Beethoven and Schubert at the fortepiano

L. van Beethoven: Trio in E flat Major Op. 70 No. 2, & F. Schubert: Trio No.º 1 in B flat minorr Op. 99

10/12/2016

The Beethoven Op. 70 Trios, composed in 1808, seem to have served as a compositional model for an entire period of music history. Schubert would follow the four-movement form in his Trio no. 1 in B flat major Op. 99. However, the thematic treatment is very different in the two composers: while Beethoven leads the themes towards a conclusive ending, Schubert works the various themes throughout the work. In this video, both trios are performed on a fortepiano by Paul McNulty (2008), which reproduces an original Conrad Graf (c. 1810) model, similar to that used by Beethoven and Schubert.
