The romantic writers: from rebellion to sadness

Anna Caballé, a writer and Lecturer in Spanish Literature at the Universitat de Barcelona, discusses the careers of several Spanish Romantic women writers, “without whom the evolution and incorporation of women into the humanities and into the professional, academic and strictly creative worlds cannot be understood”, in Caballé’s words. Juana de Vega (Countess of Espoz y Mina), Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda and Carolina Coronado shared a belief in liberal ideals and used them to try to defend a new kind of love. The heterodoxy, audacity and defiance that defined their attitudes during their youth, however retracted towards isolation and solitude in their old age.
