Anna Caballé

Concepción Arenal and her spiritual politics

2/9/2017

The writer and Lecturer in Spanish Literature at the Universitat de Barcelona, Anna Caballé discusses the biography of the writer Concepción Arenal (Ferrol, 1820 - Vigo, 1893), whom she encountered in the Christian compassion towards outcasts—the basic motivation of her life and her thought for the moral progress of society. She is particularly known for her defence of prison reform, which she became aware of as a result of charitable work with prisoners. This demand, which would be unheeded in Spain, gave her great renown outside Spain, yet did not come about due to her refusal to leave the country.
