Carme Riera and Sergio Vila-Sanjuán“When you are writing a novel, you live two lives”
The writer, academic and Professor of Spanish Literature Carme Riera reviews her professional and creative career in conversation with the journalist Sergio Vila-Sanjuán, who defines her as a “woman of letters”. In relation to her multifaceted career, she focuses on her evolution as a storyteller and experimentation with different literary genres such as the historical novel, gothic novel, political parody or crime novel. She claims to be as comfortable writing in Catalan as in Spanish and remembers that she is a writer because of the stories her grandmother used to tell her and the traditions of her native Majorca. To conclude, she cites Octavio Paz to confirm that literature “serves to remind us what we are”.
