L. van Beethoven: String Quartet No. 14 in A minor Op. 132


Beethoven pushed the limits of the string quartet so far that, for most of the nineteenth century, few composers dared to embrace the genre. His Quartet in A minor, Op. 132, with its huge scale and orchestral texture, was difficult to comprehend for listeners of the period. Perhaps the composer didn’t compose it for them, but rather for posterity, or for the Deity to which he dedicates the third movement of this work.
