Duke Ellington

Works by D. Ellington, B. Strayhorn and M. Ellington

The double-bass player Jimmy Blanton, who worked with Duke Ellington from 1939 until his death in 1942, experimented with the use and the sound of the jazz double bass, adding techniques characteristic of the classical music performance tradition. Notwithstanding, Blanton is particularly remembered for freeing the double bass from its accompaniment role and giving it the ability to act as a soloist, which is demonstrated in the performance included in this video.
