Contrapunctus. Owen Rees, conductorDissimilar Parallel Lives. Victoria & Gesualdo
Works by T. L. de Victoria and C. Gesualdo
Tomás Luis de Victoria and Carlo Gesualdo were almost contemporaries, but they led very different lives. Victoria was a priest who pursued a successful career in important religious institutions, while the aristocratic Gesualdo led a tumultuous existence that included the murder of his first wife. His musical output, created during the Counter-Reformation, was also situated at the opposite end of the stylistic spectrum. This concert features a substantial number of works by both composers, based on identical texts, highlighting the differences between them.
