The Oboe, an Overview (II). From German Romanticism to Peripheral Modernism

Works by R. Schumann and B. Britten

3/16/2019

The best techniques applied to the oboe during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries seduced composers including Robert Schumann, who composed his original work for the oboe, the Three Romances Op. 94, in 1849. The three Fantasiestücke Op. 73, original for the clarinet, are sometimes performed on the oboe d’amore, as Lucas Macías does here. Of the four works Britten composed for the oboe, the Temporal Variations are a model of his mastery of variations as a genre while the Six Metamorphoses after Ovid for solo oboe explore the instrument’s expressive versatility.
