In some respects, the style of Richard Strauss’ operas cannot be understood without the plasticity of the combination of words and music that he developed in his Lieder. Together with Strauss, other contemporary composers such as Franz Schreker and Hans Pfitzner also cultivated the genre, although without achieving the same delicacy, refinement and expressivity.
