Rafael Aguirre, guitarGuitar concert
Gran Jota, by Francisco Tárrega
Francisco Tárrega (1852-1909) played an essential role in the consolidation of the guitar as a solo instrument during the second half of the nineteenth century, prior to it bursting onto the scene decades later. Known as the Sarasate of the guitar, he took guitar technique to its highest levels, as reflected in this Gran Jota. Based on popular themes, it requires a hitherto-unknown level of virtuosity from the performer.
