Giuseppe Verdi: String quartet in E minor

11/6/2013

In his only contact with the quartet, the quintessential genre of so-called “absolute music”, Verdi demonstrated his quality as a composer. The work, probably stimulated by the birth of the first Italian quartet society, was premiered in 1873. Although the composer didn’t intend to publish it, the music publisher Ricordi brought it out in 1876, perhaps to offset the increasing presence of German music in Italy. Operatically inspired melodies are juxtaposed with its formal solidity, including elements like the fugue in the last movement.
