Johann Bernhard Bach (1676-1759) was Johann Sebastian’s cousin and learning partner. In his astonishing Chaconne in B-flat major, he uses variations on a repeated bass to express numerous affects including the elegance of stylised dance, Baroque melancholy, an innocent and rustic joy and the terribilità arising from obsessive repetition.
