Introduction et Rondo capriccioso in A minor Op. 28 by Camille Saint-Saëns

Interest in the exotic led numerous late-nineteenth century French composers to focus their attention on a Spain that Victor Hugo had described as “oriental” and “half African”. It was precisely this exoticism, and his friendship with the Navarrese violinist Pablo Sarasate, which would lead Camille Saint-Saëns to compose this Introduction et Rondo Capriccioso in 1863. Of brilliant virtuosity, the piece reflects the sounds of an idealized Spain.
