Miguel Ángel Elvira

Pergamon. Satan's Throne

1/21/2014

Of Macedonian origin, Pergamon was at its height during the reign of King Eumenes II, after his victory as an ally of Rome and Rhodes in the Roman-Syrian War (192 B.C. - 188 B.C.). The monumental constructions of its acropolis date from this period, most of the remains of which are preserved in the Pergamum Museum in Berlin, including Zeus’s Altar, which in Miguel Ángel Elvira’s words “is perhaps the only construction in Greek culture comparable to the Parthenon”. The lecture’s title is taken from the Book of Revelation, where Zeus’s Altar is referred to as “Satan’s Throne”.
