Cartharge: the Great Forgotten Metropolis

2/12/2013

After the Second Punic War, the peace between Rome and Carthage is established. However, during this period of peace, the Roman Empire still feels threatened by the newly flourished Carthage and this feeling boosts the Third and decisive Punic War, in which Carthage is devastated. Consequently, the Roman Empire spreads a distorted and false perception of the Carthage’s Civilization. With the burst in of the Enlightenment Era, along with Gustave Flaubert’s work, a more realistic and objective perception of what Carthage indeed had been, without the Roman prejudices, is revealed. In this lecture, Manuel Bendala depicts the truthful Carthage’s history and its culture.
