Through the use of a spontaneous and lyric tone, this sonnet breaks with the predominant Petrachan tradition. From the first two verses that question the validity of the metaphor ("Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? / Thou art more lovely and more temperate"), the poem itself reaffirms the possibility of eternal beauty.
